Does Moissanite Look Fake? How to Tell & Avoid the Fake Look

Discover how to choose high‑quality moissanite, spot red flags, and ensure your ring looks stunning

Let's be blunt. You've discovered moissanite, you love the fire, the price, and the ethics, but there's a nagging question that stops you from pulling the trigger: "Will people think it's fake?" We hear this all the time. This fear isn't really about the stone, it's about the social pressure and the desire to feel proud of a significant piece of jewellery.

The truth is, moissanite is a real gemstone in its own right. The "fake" look has nothing to do with what the stone is, and everything to do with quality, proportion, and setting. A cheap, poorly cut moissanite will look fake. A high-quality moissanite in a well-made setting will simply look like a stunning, fiery gemstone.

What Actually Makes a Ring Look "Fake"?

The "fake" perception almost always comes down to a few key visual triggers. Here's what to watch out for:

The "Disco Ball" Effect: Moissanite has a higher refractive index than diamond, meaning it produces more intense rainbow flashes (fire). In large stones or under direct sunlight, this can look over-the-top compared to a diamond's more balanced white and coloured sparkle. This is the #1 visual difference.

Unnatural Colour Tints: Low-grade moissanite often has a noticeable and unappealing yellow, grey, or greenish tint that instantly signals lower quality.

Glassy or "Dead" Appearance: This is a sign of a poor cut. A badly cut moissanite won't reflect light properly, making it look dull and glassy, which is a hallmark of cheap simulants like Cubic Zirconia (CZ).

The Flimsy Setting: This is the biggest mistake people make. A beautiful stone placed in a thin, weak-looking, or obviously plated setting is the fastest way to make the entire ring look cheap. The setting provides the foundation and credibility for the stone.

How to Ensure Your Moissanite Looks Premium

Avoiding the "fake" look is a science. It's about making deliberate choices that enhance the stone's beauty rather than exposing its weaknesses.

Step 1: Choose Your Cut Wisely (This Controls the Fire)

The cut is your #1 tool for managing moissanite's intense sparkle.

For a More Diamond-Like Appearance (Less Rainbow):

Step Cuts (Emerald, Asscher): These cuts have long, linear facets that create a "hall-of-mirrors" effect. They produce less fire and more flashes of white light, making them look very similar to their diamond counterparts.

Crushed Ice Cuts (Radiant, Cushion): These cuts feature many small, irregular facets that break up the light in a chaotic, glittery way. This effectively scatters the rainbow flashes, resulting in a more subtle, diamond-like sparkle.

For Refined, Maximum Brilliance:

Round Brilliant: The classic for a reason. While it's very fiery, a well-cut round moissanite is incredibly hard to distinguish from a diamond at a casual glance because the cut is optimized for pure brilliance.

Step 2: Insist on Top-Tier Stone Quality

This is non-negotiable. Just like with our bracelets, stone quality is everything.

Colour: Only accept Colorless (D-F range) or, at a minimum, Near-Colorless (G-I range). Anything lower will show that undesirable tint. We exclusively use D-grade for this reason.

Clarity: Look for VVS1 (Very, Very Slightly Included 1) or better. Moissanite is lab-created, so it should be virtually flawless to the naked eye. Any visible inclusions are a red flag for poor quality control.

Step 3: Invest in the Setting

Treat the setting as 50% of the ring's overall look.

Metal Choice: Always opt for solid 14k gold, 18k gold, or platinum. Avoid silver-plated or gold-plated settings for an engagement ring. The plating will wear off, and the cheap base metal underneath is a dead giveaway.

Prong Quality: Look for prongs that are substantial, symmetrical, and cleanly finished. Thin, bent, or clumsy-looking prongs scream "mass-produced and cheap."

How to Spot a REAL Moissanite vs. a True Fake (like CZ)

If you've bought a stone online and have doubts, here's how you can check if you got what you paid for.

The Diamond Tester Method: This is the easiest at-home test. A basic thermal conductivity diamond tester will read moissanite as "diamond." This is because they have similar thermal properties. A Cubic Zirconia (CZ) will not register on this tester. If your stone doesn't pass this test, it's not moissanite.

The Sparkle & Fire Test: With a little practice, you can spot the difference.

  • Moissanite: Intense, vivid rainbow fire.
  • Diamond: A mix of white light (brilliance) and less intense rainbow flashes (fire).
  • CZ: Has some colourful sparkle but often looks more "glassy" and lacks depth. It also gets cloudy very quickly from skin oils.

Check the Weight: Moissanite is about 15% lighter than a diamond of the same millimeter dimensions. CZ is about 75% heavier.

Look for a Laser Inscription: Many reputable moissanites have a tiny serial number laser-engraved on the girdle of the stone (the thin edge). You'll need a jeweller's loupe to see it.

Buyer's Red Flags: How to Avoid Scams Online

Prices "Too Good to Be True": While moissanite is affordable, a 2-carat ring in a solid gold setting for $100 is a major red flag. The gold alone is worth more than that. The stone is almost certainly CZ.

Vague Language: Look out for terms like "moissanite simulant," "imitation moissanite," or "man-made diamond" (a term often used to confuse buyers). The description should clearly state it is moissanite.

Stolen Photos: If the product photos look overly professional and appear on multiple different, unrelated websites, they are likely stock photos, not pictures of the actual item.

Language That Works: Owning Your Choice with Pride

The fear of being judged is real, but your confidence is the ultimate defense. You didn't "settle", you made a smart, informed choice.

If someone asks about your ring:

  • Instead of being defensive, be enthusiastic. Your answer isn't an apology; it's a statement of preference.
  • Lead with what you love about it.

"Thank you! It's a moissanite. I specifically chose it for the incredible sparkle, I just love how it catches the light."

"It's a moissanite. We loved that it's an ethical and sustainable choice, and we could get the exact design I wanted."

Remember, you are wearing a beautiful, durable, and brilliant gemstone. There is nothing to be ashamed of.

The Bottom Line

A moissanite ring doesn't have to look fake. In fact, a top-quality, well-set moissanite is a far more beautiful and impressive piece of jewellery than a low-quality, dull, or included diamond. The key is knowledge. By focusing on a high-quality stone, investing in a solid setting, and choosing a cut that you love, you are not getting a "diamond alternative", you are choosing a stunning piece of fine jewellery that will last a lifetime.
