HOW TO CARE FOR ENGAGEMENT RINGS AND FINE JEWELLERY

ESSENTIAL CARE

These rules apply to all fine jewellery. Simple habits prevent damage and maintain brilliance.

WHEN TO REMOVE

  • • Before showering. Soap creates film that dulls shine
  • • Before sleeping. Band can bend. Prongs can loosen
  • • During exercise. Pressure bends metal. Diamonds can pop out
  • • When applying lotions or perfume. Residue builds up
  • • Before swimming. Chlorine damages most metals
  • • While cleaning. Harsh chemicals harm both stones and settings

DAILY CARE

  • • Wipe with soft cloth after wearing
  • • Store separately in fabric-lined box
  • • Put jewellery on last when getting dressed
  • • Handle by the band, not the stone

LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS

Chemically identical to natural diamonds. Same hardness. Same brilliance. Same care requirements.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Soak in warm water with mild dish soap for 20-30 minutes
  • Scrub gently with soft toothbrush, focusing on underside of stone
  • Rinse thoroughly under warm water to remove all soap
  • Pat dry with lint-free cloth
  • Clean weekly for rings worn daily
  • Professional cleaning twice yearly for engagement rings

AVOID

  • Chlorine. Damages metal settings
  • Harsh chemicals like bleach and household cleaners
  • Wearing during exercise or manual work
  • Abrasive materials that scratch settings

MOISSANITE

More brilliant than diamonds. Harder than most gemstones. Maintains fire with minimal care.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Clean same as diamonds. Warm water and mild dish soap
  • Soak 10-15 minutes. Brush gently with soft toothbrush
  • Rinse completely to remove all soap residue
  • Dry with lint-free or microfiber cloth
  • Clean weekly. More often if worn daily
  • Commercial jewelry cleaners work. Ensure they are non-abrasive

AVOID

  • Chlorine and bleach. Damage settings
  • Harsh household cleaners
  • Steam cleaners unless setting is secure
  • Abrasive cloths that scratch metal

SOLID GOLD

Does not tarnish or corrode. Softer than other metals. Develops scratches that create character over time.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Clean with warm water and mild dish soap
  • Soak for 10-15 minutes. Brush gently
  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with soft cloth
  • Polish with gold-specific polishing cloth when needed
  • Professional cleaning annually restores luster

AVOID

  • Chlorine. Weakens gold alloys over time
  • Harsh chemicals and household cleaners
  • Rough handling. Gold bends and dents easily
  • Storing with harder metals that scratch

WHITE GOLD

Gold mixed with white metals. Plated with rhodium for bright white finish. Plating wears off over time.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Clean same as yellow gold. Warm water and mild soap
  • Gentle cleaning extends rhodium plating life
  • Professional replating every 1-3 years for engagement rings
  • Polish only with soft cloth. Avoid abrasive polishing
  • Store in fabric-lined box to prevent scratches

AVOID

  • Chlorine. Damages both gold and rhodium plating
  • Harsh scrubbing. Wears plating faster
  • Household chemicals
  • Wearing during manual work or exercise

PLATINUM

Naturally white. No plating needed. Denser than gold. Develops patina from microscratches.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

  • Clean with warm water and mild soap
  • Soak 10-15 minutes. Brush gently
  • Polish with platinum-specific cloth to restore shine
  • Professional polishing removes patina completely
  • Annual professional inspection recommended

AVOID

  • Chlorine. Can discolor platinum over time
  • Harsh chemicals
  • Abrasive cleaners that increase scratching
  • Ultrasonic cleaners unless checked by jeweler first

PROFESSIONAL CARE

Home care maintains appearance. Professional care prevents loss. Schedule regular inspections to catch problems early.

RECOMMENDED SCHEDULE

  • • Every 6 months for engagement rings worn daily
  • • Annually for other fine jewellery
  • • After any impact or damage
  • • Before replating white gold

WHAT JEWELERS CHECK

  • • Prong integrity. Loose prongs cause stone loss
  • • Metal wear on shanks and settings
  • • Stone security and tightness
  • • Need for replating on white gold
