Inside diameter is the straight distance across a round ring’s opening, excluding the metal. Inside circumference is the distance around that opening. Keep the unit and measurement type with your number: “17 mm inside diameter” is much more useful than “size 17”.

A paper strip around a finger gives an estimate of finger circumference. It does not reproduce the fit of every metal band. A jeweller can assess the intended finger with suitable gauges and measure an existing ring on a mandrel.

No chart displayed on an uncalibrated screen is reliably actual size. Phone dimensions, browser zoom and screenshots can change the scale. Use a physical measurement and the numerical table instead of placing a ring against a screen circle.

For a round ring that fits the intended finger and hand, measure straight across the inside opening. Do not include the metal. If it is out of round, unusually wide or a different interior profile from the intended design, ask a jeweller to check it.

Measure the finger the ring will be worn on. For an engagement or wedding ring in Australia that is the left ring finger, and your two hands can differ by a size. See which hand and finger the rings go on.

Australian and UK guides generally use letters; US and Canadian guides use numbers. A conversion table relates those labels, but published charts can disagree on the nearest letter or fractional number. There is no reliable universal shortcut that makes every maker’s labels exact equivalents.

Use the chart supplied by the maker taking your order. If you are comparing two brands, provide the inside dimensions of a well-fitting ring and the intended band width rather than relying on a label alone. The rows here remain a practical starting reference.

Identify whether you measured inside diameter, inside circumference or a finger-wrap length. Do not infer the quantity from the size of the number. Convert centimetres to millimetres by multiplying by ten, then select the matching input in the converter.

For a circular opening, circumference equals π times diameter. A 17 mm inside diameter therefore gives about 53.4 mm circumference. The chart’s displayed measurements are rounded, and a mathematical conversion does not establish the best fit or an exact international size label.

If your input lies between listed rows, retain the original reading. Have the intended design checked rather than automatically selecting the larger or smaller size.

The H-to-R rows below are a convenient part of the full reference table, not a prescribed range for women. Size depends on the intended finger and hand. Any wearer may need a size outside this selection.

AU, New Zealand and UK letters

These markets commonly use letter-based guides. Half-letter labels may be offered, but a chart or maker may not list every one. Use the maker’s own gauge and ordering convention when confirming a size.

US and Canadian numbers

These guides commonly use numbered sizes with fractional steps. The US column here is an approximate reference against the listed inside measurements; published letter equivalents are not always identical.

Circumference-based labels

Many European references use inside circumference in millimetres. Confirm the system before treating a stamped number as a measurement. The ISO ring-size framework addresses measurement; it does not make every country’s retail labels interchangeable.

Japan

The Japan column uses the nearest nominal gauge diameter in the JIS reference reproduced by the Japan Jewellery Association. It is an approximate comparison to the rounded diameter in this chart. A slash shows two equally near references. It does not represent a Chinese size.

Averages can conceal differences between hands, fingers and ring designs. They are not a substitute for measuring the intended finger. Temperature and activity can also affect a reading, so check at a comfortable temperature and repeat at different normal times.

For a surprise, a ring worn on the same finger and hand is a useful reference if available. Confirm the design’s adjustment options before ordering rather than assuming any ring can be resized later.
