What time of day do fingers swell the most?

Quick answer

Evening, especially in summer and after salty food or exercise. Fingers shrink overnight and read smallest in the morning. Mid-afternoon is the best compromise and is what jewellers recommend for ring sizing. A ring sized in the morning feels tight by dinner. A ring sized late at night feels loose in the morning.

Why fingers swell and shrink

Fingers change size by roughly half a ring size, or about 1 to 3mm in diameter, between their morning low and their evening high. The physiology is straightforward: blood vessels dilate when the body warms up, which expands the surrounding tissue, and the kidneys process fluid more slowly through the middle of the day. Sodium, alcohol and strenuous exercise all add temporary swelling on top of the daily baseline. Hormonal cycles, pregnancy and breastfeeding can shift the resting size by half a size or more for weeks at a time. Heat, humidity and long-haul flights all push fingers toward the upper end of their normal range, which is why a holiday ring often feels different on the way home.

A sizing strategy across seasons and life events

Get sized mid-afternoon in moderate weather to capture an average reading rather than a daily extreme. If the wearer lives in Queensland or the Northern Territory, size for summer, since the gap between winter and summer fits is real in northern Australia. Avoid sizing in the morning, immediately after exercise or after a salty meal. If the wearer is pregnant or planning to be, hold off on the final fitting until later in pregnancy or accept that the ring may need temporary sizing beads. Most jewellers offer a free first resize within six months of purchase, which covers swing in finger size that the first fitting could not predict.
