Lab-Grown Diamonds Australia
Certified lab-grown diamonds — chemically identical to mined diamonds at a fraction of the price. Every stone comes with an independent GIA or IGI grading report. Handcrafted into bespoke engagement rings at our Melbourne studio.
Why Choose Lab-Grown Diamonds
Same Diamond, Lower Price
Lab-grown diamonds cost 50–70% less than mined diamonds of equivalent quality. The savings come from a more efficient production process — not from any difference in the stone.
Independently Certified
Every LILY DIA diamond comes with a GIA or IGI grading report — the same laboratories and standards used for mined diamonds. You know exactly what you are buying.
Ethically Sourced
No mining, no conflict sourcing, no environmental destruction. Lab-grown diamonds are produced in controlled facilities with traceable supply chains. Learn more in our ethical diamonds guide.
Scientifically Identical
Pure carbon in a cubic crystal lattice. 10 on the Mohs scale. Refractive index of 2.42. A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond in every measurable way.
How Lab-Grown Diamonds Are Made
Two methods produce gem-quality lab-grown diamonds. Both create stones that are indistinguishable from mined diamonds without specialised laboratory equipment.
- HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature) replicates the conditions deep within the earth — around 1,500°C and extreme pressure. A diamond seed is placed in a carbon source, and the surrounding environment forces carbon atoms to crystallise around it.
- CVD (Chemical Vapour Deposition) places a diamond seed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. The gas is heated until carbon atoms separate and deposit onto the seed, building a diamond crystal layer by layer over several weeks.

Understanding the 4Cs
Lab-grown diamonds are graded using the same 4Cs framework as mined diamonds — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Here is what to prioritise when choosing.
Cut
The most important factor. An excellent cut maximises brilliance and fire. Always prioritise cut grade above all else — it has the greatest impact on how your diamond looks.
Colour
Grades G to J offer excellent value — they appear colourless to the naked eye, especially in yellow or rose gold settings. Read our colour guide.
Clarity
VS2 and SI1 diamonds are typically eye-clean — no visible inclusions at normal viewing distance. See our clarity guide for grade-by-grade advice.
Carat
Measures weight, not size. Because lab-grown diamonds cost less, you can often afford a larger carat weight than you could with a mined diamond at the same budget.
Lab-Grown vs Mined Diamonds
The only difference between a lab-grown diamond and a mined diamond is how it was formed. One grew in a laboratory over weeks; the other formed in the earth over billions of years. In every other measurable way — hardness, brilliance, chemical composition, certification standards — they are identical.
Lab-grown diamonds pass standard diamond testers. They are graded by the same laboratories. They last forever. And they cost significantly less, which means your budget goes further — a bigger stone, a better cut, or a more elaborate setting.

Lab-Grown Diamond Questions
Are lab-grown diamonds real diamonds?
Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. They are real diamonds — the only difference is their origin. The FTC updated its definition of "diamond" in 2018 to include lab-grown stones.
How much cheaper are lab-grown diamonds in Australia?
Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 50–70% less than mined diamonds of equivalent quality. A 1-carat lab-grown diamond that might cost $2,000–$4,000 could be $8,000–$12,000 as a mined stone. The savings reflect production efficiency, not any difference in the diamond itself.
Are lab-grown diamonds certified?
Yes. All LILY DIA lab-grown diamonds come with independent grading reports from GIA or IGI. They are assessed using the same 4Cs framework — cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight — as mined diamonds.
Can a jeweller tell the difference between lab-grown and mined diamonds?
Not with standard tools. Lab-grown diamonds pass standard diamond testers because they have identical thermal and electrical conductivity. Only specialised laboratory equipment designed to detect growth patterns can distinguish them.
Do lab-grown diamonds hold their value?
Lab-grown diamonds are not typically purchased as investment assets, and their resale value is lower than mined diamonds. However, most engagement rings — whether mined or lab-grown — are bought to be worn, not resold. The value is in the ring itself and what it represents.
How long does a lab-grown diamond last?
Forever. Lab-grown diamonds have the same hardness (10 on the Mohs scale), durability, and chemical stability as mined diamonds. They will not cloud, fade, or degrade over time.
Can I design a custom ring with a lab-grown diamond?
Yes. Every LILY DIA engagement ring is made to order. You choose the stone, setting style, metal, and design details. Our co-founders Brie and Jared guide you through a personal 3-step design process.
