Choosing well comes down to judging the stone by its certificate and measurements, then matching it to a setting that suits the shape. The order matters.

• Cut first: a well-cut stone outperforms a bigger, poorly cut one every time. A deep-cut diamond hides weight underneath and faces up smaller than its carat suggests, which is where cheap headlines usually come from.
• Then size, in millimetres: check the measurements line on the report against the carat size chart so you know what the weight actually looks like face up.
• Colour and clarity last: E-F colour at VS1 or better is the sweet spot at 2 carats and up; step cuts like emerald and Asscher need the higher clarity because their open facets hide nothing.
