Ring Size Chart
Quick answer
Australian ring sizes run from A to Z+ and match the UK system. The typical size in Australia is M for women (US 6, around 16.7mm inside diameter) and T to U for men (US 9 to 10). The chart below converts every Australian size to US, UK, EU and Japanese sizes using circumference and diameter in millimetres, so you can size a ring from any measurement you already have.

*for rings wider than 3mm, consider selecting a half size larger for comfort.
Read across the row to convert between systems. Circumference is the distance around the inside of the band; diameter is the straight line across. For bands wider than 3mm, choose the next half size up for comfort.
How the sizing systems compare
Australian, New Zealand and UK
Letters from A to Z+, matching the UK system exactly. Half sizes use ½ (M½, N½), and the system runs in roughly 0.4mm increments. Most women fall between K and P, most men between R and W. The letter has no direct relationship to a millimetre number, so always read the conversion off the chart.
US and Canada
Numerical sizes from 1 to 15, with half and quarter steps. US 6 to 7 covers most women; US 9 to 10 covers most men. The US uses the same physical sizes as Australia, only the labels differ.
European
Numbers that mirror the inside circumference in millimetres. A size 52 means roughly 52mm of internal circumference, which is an Australian L½ to M½ or a US 6. If you measured with a strip of paper and a ruler, the European size is close to the millimetre number you read off.
Japanese and Chinese
Numerical sizes starting from 1. Japan and China use similar scales but they are not identical, so confirm the system on the chart before ordering from East Asia. A Japanese 13 sits around 16.9mm diameter, the same finger as an Australian M½.
Average ring sizes in Australia
Women
M to N, around 17mm inside diameter, which is a US 6 to 7. Most adult women sit between K and P, so the range covers the majority of fingers without going to a special order.
Men
T to U, around 19 to 20mm inside diameter, which is a US 9 to 10. Most adult men sit between R and W, with broader hands closer to V or W.
These averages help when you cannot measure the wearer directly, like ordering an engagement ring before the proposal. Fingers swell in heat and shrink in cold, so a size measured in winter can feel tight by February. The closer you can get to a real measurement, the better the fit will be.

Once you have a size, you can compare settings, metals and stone shapes against the finger you are sizing for.
View engagement ringsFrequently asked questions
- What is the average ring size for a woman in Australia?
- M to N, around 17 millimetres inside diameter. That converts to a US 6 to 7. Most adult women in Australia sit between K and P.
- What is the average ring size for a man in Australia?
- T to U, around 19 to 20 millimetres inside diameter. That converts to a US 9 to 10. Most adult men sit between R and W.
- How do I convert an Australian ring size to a US size?
- Find the Australian letter in the chart and read across to the US column. A size M in Australia is close to a US 6, and an N is close to a US 7. The two systems use different increments, so the conversion is read off the table rather than calculated.
- How do I find my ring size in millimetres?
- Wrap a strip of paper or a piece of string around the widest part of the finger, mark where it overlaps, and measure that length in millimetres. That number is the inside circumference. Divide it by π (about 3.14) to get the inside diameter, which is the column most jewellers use.
- Is the European size the same as the circumference in millimetres?
- Close. A European size 52 means the ring has an internal circumference of about 52 millimetres. The numbers are rounded, so a single EU size covers a small range of finger sizes.
- Does band width change the size I should order?
- Yes. Wider bands sit tighter on the same finger because they cover more skin. For bands wider than 3 millimetres, go up by a half size.
