What makes jewellery unique?
By Jared James · Last updated 21 May 2026
Definition
Unique jewellery refers to a piece that is genuinely one of a kind or is distinctly different from mass-produced designs, either because it was made as a single piece by a craftsperson, uses an unusual combination of materials or techniques, or incorporates an element that cannot be exactly replicated, such as a natural stone with a specific inclusion pattern. Bespoke commissions, handmade artist pieces and jewellery set with unusual or rare gems all fall under the term.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between unique and bespoke jewellery?
- Bespoke means the piece was designed and made to a specific customer's brief, so by definition it is unique, but unique covers a wider group, including one-off artist pieces and limited editions not made to order.
- Is handmade jewellery always unique?
- A skilled maker can produce consistent multiples by hand, so handmade and unique are not the same thing. That said, handmade pieces do carry natural variation that factory-made work does not, and many handmade jewellers intentionally work in small or single-piece runs.
- How do you find truly unique jewellery?
- Working directly with an independent jeweller or commissioning a bespoke piece is the most reliable way. Antique and vintage jewellery is also inherently unique in the sense that the exact piece is a one-off, and estate pieces often have unusual designs that no longer appear in current production.
