What makes jewellery unique?

Definition

Unique jewellery refers to a piece that is genuinely one of a kind or is distinctly different from mass-produced designs, either because it was made as a single piece by a craftsperson, uses an unusual combination of materials or techniques, or incorporates an element that cannot be exactly replicated, such as a natural stone with a specific inclusion pattern. Bespoke commissions, handmade artist pieces and jewellery set with unusual or rare gems all fall under the term.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between unique and bespoke jewellery?
Bespoke means the piece was designed and made to a specific customer's brief, so by definition it is unique, but unique covers a wider group, including one-off artist pieces and limited editions not made to order.
Is handmade jewellery always unique?
A skilled maker can produce consistent multiples by hand, so handmade and unique are not the same thing. That said, handmade pieces do carry natural variation that factory-made work does not, and many handmade jewellers intentionally work in small or single-piece runs.
How do you find truly unique jewellery?
Working directly with an independent jeweller or commissioning a bespoke piece is the most reliable way. Antique and vintage jewellery is also inherently unique in the sense that the exact piece is a one-off, and estate pieces often have unusual designs that no longer appear in current production.
