What is Catalin jewellery?

Definition
Catalin is a trade name for a cast phenolic plastic, a type of phenol-formaldehyde resin produced from the mid-1920s onwards. Unlike Bakelite, which was compression-moulded and usually dark or opaque, Catalin was cast in liquid form into moulds, which allowed it to be made in clear, translucent and brightly coloured versions and given a smooth, polishable surface. In vintage jewellery, Catalin bangles, brooches and clips from the 1930s and 1940s are highly collectable for their jewel-like colours, ranging from deep amber and cherry red to vivid yellow and green.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between Catalin and Bakelite?
- Both are phenolic plastics, but they are made differently. Bakelite is a compression-moulded thermosetting plastic that tends to be dark and opaque, while Catalin is cast in moulds and can be made in bright, translucent colours. Jewellery collectors often use the terms interchangeably, but Catalin is more accurate for the colourful vintage pieces most often found.
- How can you tell if a vintage piece is Catalin?
- The hot-pin test is traditional: briefly touching a hot needle to an inconspicuous spot on Catalin releases a carbolic or phenolic smell. Genuine Catalin also feels warm and slightly heavier than modern plastics, and it will not melt or drip as newer plastics do. A professional conservator or specialist dealer can confirm authenticity.
- Is Catalin jewellery valuable?
- Collectible Catalin pieces from the 1930s and 1940s, especially figural brooches, carved bangles and brightly coloured sets in good condition, can fetch significant prices. Rare colours like red and deep green, intact carving and documented makers all increase the value.
