Definition

A cuff bracelet is a rigid or semi-rigid bracelet with a gap that allows it to slide onto the wrist from the side rather than pass over the hand like a closed bangle. The opening gives it a fitted look once on, and it comes in widths from a slender band to a wide sculptural statement piece. Cuffs can be plain polished metal, gem-set, textured or engraved, and they appear in gold, silver, platinum and mixed metals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a cuff and a bangle?
A bangle is a closed circle of rigid metal that you pass over the hand and onto the wrist. A cuff has a gap or opening so you push it on from the side and it grips the wrist. Bangles are usually lighter and stackable, while cuffs tend to be bolder, wider and worn as a single statement piece.
How do you size a cuff bracelet?
Measure the narrowest part of your wrist where the cuff will sit, then add roughly 1 to 2 centimetres for comfort. Most cuffs have a small amount of flexibility in the opening, so they accommodate a range of wrist sizes, but getting this roughly right matters for a piece that stays put.
Can cuff bracelets be worn as ear cuffs?
The word cuff covers both wrist and ear versions, but an ear cuff is its own separate piece, much smaller and designed to clip onto the outer rim of the ear. The two are quite different in scale and construction, though the open, clip-on principle is similar.
