What is a bangle?

Definition
A bangle is a rigid, inflexible bracelet, usually circular or oval in shape, that is slipped over the hand and worn around the wrist rather than fastened with a clasp. Unlike a chain bracelet, it has no give and holds its shape whether on or off the wrist. Bangles can be plain polished tubes, heavily engraved, set with diamonds or gemstones, or stacked in groups for a layered look. They appear in virtually every jewellery tradition around the world and come in gold, silver, platinum and a wide range of other materials.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between a bangle and a bracelet?
- A bangle is rigid and slips on over the hand, while a bracelet is the broader term covering flexible, linked or chain styles that usually fasten with a clasp. All bangles are bracelets, but a chain bracelet is not a bangle.
- How do I find the right bangle size?
- Measure the widest part of your hand, across your knuckles, with your fingers together and thumb tucked in. That is the minimum size needed for the bangle to slide over. Add a little depending on how loose you want it to sit on the wrist.
- Can bangles be resized?
- Plain solid bangles can be carefully stretched or compressed by a skilled jeweller within a small range, but significant resizing is difficult without distorting the shape. It is worth getting the size right when you buy, as resizing is more limited than with rings.
