Definition

Rock crystal is the name given to colourless, perfectly transparent quartz, one of the most abundant minerals on earth. It is essentially pure silicon dioxide with no trace elements to add colour, so it looks like glass but feels heavier and colder to the touch. Historically it was polished into beads, cabochons, intaglios and vessels long before glass-making was common, and today it still appears in jewellery as a clean, affordable alternative to colourless gemstones, often faceted to catch the light.

Frequently asked questions

Is rock crystal the same as quartz?
Yes, rock crystal is simply the jewellery and collector name for colourless transparent quartz. All rock crystal is quartz, though quartz comes in many other varieties, from amethyst to citrine to rose quartz, each coloured by different trace elements.
Is rock crystal valuable?
Rock crystal is generally affordable because transparent quartz is very common. Fine pieces with exceptional clarity and no inclusions have some collector value, and antique rock crystal carvings or intaglios can be quite precious, but raw material for jewellery is not expensive.
How can you tell rock crystal from glass?
Rock crystal feels noticeably cold and heavy compared with glass, and it will not scratch as easily. Under magnification, genuine quartz often shows natural inclusions or growth patterns that glass lacks.
