Definition

A toggle clasp is a two-part jewellery fastening consisting of a ring at one end and a short bar at the other, where the bar is pushed through the ring sideways and then falls perpendicular to it, using gravity and the tension of the chain to keep the clasp closed. It is one of the most recognisable and decorative clasp styles in jewellery, because both the ring and the bar are usually visible parts of the design rather than hidden mechanics. Toggle clasps are popular on necklaces and bracelets where they double as a design feature.

Frequently asked questions

Is a toggle clasp secure enough for everyday wear?
Toggle clasps are reasonably secure on necklaces, where the chain's own weight keeps the bar horizontal through the ring. On bracelets they are less secure because movement can flip the bar to a vertical position and let it slide out, so they are better suited to heavier chains and wider bracelets where the tension of wear keeps them in place.
How do you fasten a toggle clasp?
Hold the ring end steady and tilt the bar end at an angle so the bar passes through the centre of the ring, then let the bar drop to a horizontal position so it bridges across the ring's opening. The bar is wider than the ring opening when horizontal, so gravity and the chain's tension hold it in place.
What is the difference between a toggle clasp and a lobster clasp?
A lobster clasp has a spring-loaded mechanism that clicks shut and is considered more secure because it requires active operation to open. A toggle clasp is simpler and more decorative but relies on gravity and tension to stay closed. Lobster clasps are easier to fasten one-handed; toggles are often easier for people with limited dexterity because they require no pinching or squeezing.
