What is Tanzanite?
Tanzanite is a blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, found only in a small area near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. It was discovered by Maasai herders and introduced to the gem world by Tiffany & Co., who named it after its country of origin. Most tanzanite is heat-treated to enhance its blue colour. Zircon (not to be confused with cubic zirconia) is a natural mineral with exceptional brilliance and fire, available in blue, white, and many other colours. Turquoise is an opaque, blue-green mineral that has been prized for thousands of years across cultures from the American Southwest to ancient Persia.
Properties
Colour
Tanzanite displays a rich violet-blue, often shifting between blue and violet depending on the viewing angle. Zircon comes in blue, colourless, yellow, green, and red. Turquoise ranges from sky blue to green, sometimes with brown or black matrix patterns.
Hardness
Tanzanite is 6 to 7 Mohs, requiring careful wear. Zircon is 6 to 7.5. Turquoise is 5 to 6, making it the softest of the three.
Origins
Tanzanite comes exclusively from Tanzania. Zircon is found in Cambodia, Sri Lanka, and Australia. Turquoise is sourced from Iran, the American Southwest, China, and Egypt.
Lustre
Tanzanite has vitreous lustre with strong pleochroism (showing different colours from different angles). Zircon displays high brilliance approaching diamond. Turquoise has a waxy to dull lustre in its natural state.
History
Tanzanite's story is remarkably recent. In 1967, Maasai cattle herders noticed brilliant blue crystals on the ground in northern Tanzania after a lightning strike set fire to the grassland. Geologists identified the stones as a new variety of zoisite. Tiffany & Co. recognised its potential and introduced tanzanite to the world in 1968. Zircon has been known since the Middle Ages, when it was believed to promote sleep and drive away evil spirits. Turquoise has been valued for over 5,000 years. Ancient Egyptians set it in gold, Persian palaces were decorated with it, and Native American peoples have used it in sacred ceremonies and jewellery for centuries.
Meaning & Symbolism
Tanzanite symbolises transformation, spiritual awareness, and new beginnings. As one of the newest gemstones, it represents the excitement of discovery. It is thought to stimulate intuition and raise consciousness. Zircon is associated with wisdom, honour, and wealth. Turquoise is perhaps the most universally protective stone across cultures, believed to bring good fortune, promote honest communication, and strengthen the bond between friends.
How to Care for Tanzanite
Tanzanite requires careful handling. Clean only with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, as tanzanite is sensitive to sudden temperature changes and can crack. Avoid wearing tanzanite rings during physical activity. Zircon can be cleaned with warm soapy water but is somewhat brittle, so handle with care. Turquoise is porous and should never be exposed to chemicals, oils, or even water for extended periods. Clean turquoise with a dry, soft cloth only.
Tanzanite Jewellery Ideas
Tanzanite's rich violet-blue makes it a stunning centre stone for statement rings and pendants. Its colour looks exceptional in white gold or platinum settings with diamond accents. Zircon, particularly in blue, offers diamond-like brilliance in earrings and necklaces at an accessible price. Turquoise jewellery ranges from bold, bohemian cuffs and statement necklaces to delicate, modern settings in gold that give the ancient stone a contemporary edge.
