Eternity Ring

An eternity ring (also called an eternity band or infinity ring) is a band set with a continuous line of identically cut gemstones, most commonly diamonds. A "full eternity" ring has stones all the way around the band, while a "half eternity" has stones on the front-facing half only. The continuous circle of stones symbolises everlasting love and commitment. Eternity rings are typically worn on the ring finger alongside engagement and wedding rings, though they can be worn on any finger.

The concept of an endless circle symbolising eternity dates to ancient Egypt, where rings made of braided reeds were exchanged between lovers. Diamond eternity bands became popular in the 1960s, reportedly promoted by De Beers as a way to mark wedding anniversaries. The marketing campaign suggested a diamond eternity ring for the 25th anniversary, but the concept quickly expanded to any significant milestone. Today, eternity rings are given for anniversaries, births, personal achievements, and as self-purchases.

Full eternity rings have diamonds around the entire circumference — beautiful from every angle but difficult to resize. Half eternity rings have stones on the visible top half with a plain metal band underneath — easier to resize and more comfortable for some wearers. Common diamond shapes include round brilliant (classic), princess cut (modern), baguette (Art Deco), marquise (vintage), and oval (contemporary). Shared-prong, channel, and bezel settings are the most common. Coloured gemstone eternity rings offer a vibrant alternative.

Decide between full and half eternity first — full is more visually impactful, but half is more practical and resizable. Get your finger size measured professionally, as eternity rings (particularly full eternity) are very difficult to resize. Round brilliant diamonds in shared-prong settings offer the most sparkle. Channel settings are more secure and snag-free. Consider how the eternity ring will sit next to your existing rings — it should complement, not compete. Lab-grown diamonds make higher carat weight eternity bands accessible.

Eternity rings are designed to stack. The classic three-ring stack is engagement ring flanked by wedding band and eternity band. Multiple eternity bands in different widths or metals create a fashion-forward stacked look. An eternity ring can also be worn alone on the right hand as a standalone statement. Mix diamond eternity bands with coloured gemstone bands for a playful, personalised stack. Thin eternity bands are the most versatile for mixing and stacking.

Clean regularly with warm soapy water and a soft brush — the settings between stones can trap dirt. Have prongs checked annually. Full eternity rings require extra care as stones are exposed around the entire band, including the palm side where they can knock against surfaces. Consider a half eternity for daily wear if you work with your hands. Store separately from other rings to avoid scratching.

Eternity ring prices depend primarily on the total carat weight and diamond quality. A simple half eternity with small diamonds can start from $500, while a full eternity band with larger stones can reach $5,000-$20,000+. Full eternity rings cost more than half eternity due to the additional stones. Lab-grown diamond eternity bands offer significant savings — a full eternity band that would cost $5,000 in natural diamonds might cost $1,500-$2,000 in lab-grown.
