Definition
A bolt ring clasp is a circular metal finding used to fasten necklaces and bracelets, consisting of a hollow ring with a small spring-loaded bolt that slides back when you push it with a fingernail or thumbnail and snaps shut again under spring pressure when released. It connects to a jump ring or tag at the other end of the chain. Bolt rings are among the most common necklace clasps; they are secure, simple and available in many metals including gold, sterling silver and stainless steel.
Frequently asked questions
- How does a bolt ring clasp work?
- You push back the small sliding bolt with your thumbnail to open a gap in the ring, hook it onto the jump ring at the other end of the chain, then release the bolt so it springs shut. The circle is then closed and the necklace or bracelet stays fastened.
- What is the difference between a bolt ring and a lobster clasp?
- A bolt ring is circular with a straight sliding bolt, while a lobster clasp is shaped like a lobster claw with a lever that opens a hook. Lobster clasps are generally larger and easier to open with one hand, which is why they have become more popular for heavier chains.
- Are bolt ring clasps secure?
- Yes, they are quite secure for everyday jewellery as the spring mechanism keeps the bolt firmly closed. Very small bolt rings can be fiddly to open, but the closing mechanism is reliable and unlikely to open accidentally.
