What is a jump ring in jewellery?

Definition

A jump ring is a small, circular or oval ring made from a single loop of wire with a cut that allows it to be opened and closed, used in jewellery making to connect components like charms, pendants, clasps and chain sections. They come in a wide range of diameters, wire gauges and metals, from fine sterling silver and gold-filled versions used in finished jewellery to stainless steel rings used in chainmaille work. Getting the technique right matters: opening a jump ring by pulling the ends apart rather than bending them outward keeps the circle round and the join tight.

Frequently asked questions

What is the correct way to open a jump ring?
Hold the jump ring with two pairs of flat-nose pliers, one on each side of the gap, and twist one end forward and the other back so the opening is a gap in the same plane as the ring. Pulling the ends apart sideways distorts the ring into a diamond shape and makes it very difficult to close neatly.
What is the difference between a jump ring and a split ring?
A jump ring is a single loop of wire with one cut, opened and closed by a twisting action. A split ring is a double loop like a keyring, where the wire spirals around twice so the item attaches by threading under the coil. Split rings are more secure because there is no opening to work loose, but they are harder to attach quickly.
What size jump ring should I use?
The right size depends on the weight and size of the component being linked. As a general rule, the jump ring should be wide enough that the linked pieces can hang and move freely, and thick enough in wire gauge that it will not deform under the load. For pendant necklaces, a 5 to 7 millimetre ring in 0.8 to 1 millimetre wire is a common starting point in gold or sterling silver.
