Definition

A cable chain is one of the most classic necklace styles, made from a series of uniform oval or round links connected so that each link alternates at a right angle to the next, creating a flat, flexible rope-like appearance. It is the chain most people picture when they think of a simple gold or silver necklace, and it comes in a wide range of link sizes from very fine and delicate to chunky and bold. Cable chains are sturdy, versatile and suit pendants well because the even link structure provides a stable hang.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a cable chain different from a rolo chain?
A rolo chain, also called a belcher chain, uses round links of equal size that all lie in the same plane rather than alternating angles. Cable chains alternate the orientation of each link, giving a slightly flatter, more flexible drape, while rolo chains have a more three-dimensional, rounded look.
What pendants suit a cable chain?
Cable chains suit almost any pendant because the links are even and the chain hangs flat. Heavier pendants need a thicker gauge chain; very fine cable chains are best for small, lightweight charms or worn alone.
Is a cable chain strong?
Cable chains are among the more durable styles because the individual links are simple and solid. Fine cable chains can be delicate, but medium and heavy gauges are very reliable for everyday wear.
