What is hand engraving on jewellery?

Definition
Hand engraving is the craft of cutting decorative designs, lettering or patterns directly into metal using hand-held tools called gravers, scorpers and spit sticks rather than laser cutters, mechanical engravers or chemicals. The engraver holds the piece in a rotating ball vice and pushes or steers the cutting tool through the metal by hand, creating lines, textures and sculpted forms that each bear the slightly individual character of the person who made them. It is used for personalising rings and lockets with initials and dates, for bright-cut borders on Victorian-style jewellery, and for elaborate floral or scroll designs on watch cases and silverware.
Frequently asked questions
- How is hand engraving different from laser engraving?
- Laser engraving uses a controlled beam to vaporise metal precisely, producing very fine, consistent marks quickly. Hand engraving cuts the metal physically, creating wider, brighter lines with a slightly dimensional quality and a warmth that reflects the maker's hand. For intricate ornamental work, hand engraving is generally considered the more refined option.
- What metals can be hand engraved?
- Gold, silver, platinum, copper and brass are all commonly engraved by hand. Harder metals like platinum require sharper tools and more force but can be engraved beautifully. Very hard materials like steel are also engraved but demand specialist skills.
- Can any text or design be hand engraved on a ring?
- Most lettering and many designs can be engraved inside or outside a ring, though very fine detail and extremely small text are limited by what the graver can physically cut cleanly. A skilled engraver will advise on what works at the scale available.
