What is laser drilling in diamonds?

Definition

Laser drilling is a clarity treatment used on diamonds, where a fine laser beam is aimed at a dark inclusion inside the stone, burning a tiny channel through to it. Once the channel is open, acid or bleaching agents are introduced to dissolve or lighten the dark material, making the inclusion far less visible. The resulting drill hole is a permanent feature of the stone and must be disclosed when selling. Laser-drilled diamonds appear on grading reports, and the treatment is considered acceptable as long as it is clearly declared.

Frequently asked questions

Does laser drilling weaken a diamond?
The microscopic channels left by laser drilling are extremely fine and do not meaningfully compromise the structural integrity of the stone in most cases. The treatment is widely accepted in the trade, though some buyers prefer untreated stones.
Do grading labs note laser drilling on a diamond certificate?
Yes, GIA and other major laboratories note laser drilling on their reports because it is a permanent treatment that affects the stone's appearance and potentially its value. Always check the certificate before buying.
Does laser drilling improve a diamond's clarity grade?
It can improve the visible appearance of a stone significantly by removing or lightening prominent dark inclusions, and it may result in a higher clarity grade after treatment. A higher grade from drilling is worth less than the same grade in an untreated stone.
