What is laser engraving on jewellery?

Definition
Laser engraving on jewellery uses a focused, high-powered laser beam to vaporise a shallow layer of metal and etch a design, text or pattern permanently into the surface. Because the laser is computer-controlled, it can produce very fine lines, intricate details, QR codes and even photographic images that would be difficult to achieve by hand. It works on gold, silver, platinum and stainless steel, and it is popular for personalising rings, pendants and ID bracelets with names, dates and messages.
Frequently asked questions
- How is laser engraving different from hand engraving?
- Hand engraving involves a craftsperson cutting the design into the metal with a graver, which gives a unique, slightly organic quality that machines cannot fully replicate. Laser engraving is more precise and consistent, faster, and can produce much finer detail, but it lacks the character of a hand-engraved piece.
- Can laser engraving be removed from jewellery?
- It can be polished away by a jeweller, though whether this is practical depends on how deep the engraving is and how much metal can be removed without affecting the piece. For most pieces, engraving is best considered permanent.
- What can be laser engraved on a ring?
- Names, dates, short messages, coordinates, fingerprints, signatures and simple graphic motifs are all popular choices. The inside of a ring band is the most common spot, with the outside surface used for more visible decorative engraving.
