What is a lever back earring?
By Jared James · Last updated 21 May 2026
Definition
A lever back is a type of earring fastening where a curved wire passes through the ear piercing and then clips shut under a small hinged lever, creating a secure closure with no separate butterfly or nut. The wire hooks in from the front and the lever snaps down to hold it in place, making it much harder for the earring to fall out accidentally compared to a simple hook. Lever backs are popular on heavier drop and dangle earrings where a more secure hold is welcome.
Frequently asked questions
- Are lever back earrings more secure than fish hooks?
- Yes. A standard fish hook relies on the weight of the earring and the shape of the wire to stay in the ear, which can allow it to slip out. A lever back clicks shut positively and requires an intentional press to open, so the earring stays in place far more reliably.
- Are lever back earrings easy to put on?
- Once you get the feel of the mechanism they are quite straightforward. You open the lever, pass the wire through your ear, then press the lever closed. Some people find them slightly fiddly at first, particularly those with limited hand dexterity.
- What earring styles use lever backs?
- Lever backs are most commonly used on drop earrings and small hoops where security matters most. You will see them on diamond drops, gemstone dangles and anything with a bit of weight that you would not want to lose.
