What are drop earrings?

Definition
Drop earrings are earrings where the main feature sits slightly below the earlobe, typically as a single element suspended from a stud or wire. Unlike dangle earrings, which are designed to swing freely, drop earrings may stay relatively still depending on how they are made; a solid teardrop pearl on a short wire drops but does not sway much, while a longer linked design will move with you. The two terms are often used interchangeably, and many designs are both at once.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between drop earrings and dangle earrings?
- Drop earrings have the main design element hanging just below the earlobe and may not move much. Dangle earrings are specifically designed to swing back and forth. In practice the terms overlap a great deal and many earrings can be described either way.
- What occasions suit drop earrings?
- Drop earrings are wonderfully versatile. A small diamond or pearl drop works for everyday wear and formal occasions alike, while larger, more elaborate drops suit weddings, evenings out and special events. The scale of the drop tends to guide the occasion.
- What metal is best for drop earrings?
- Gold, whether yellow, white or rose, is the classic choice and the most skin-friendly for pierced ears. Sterling silver is a popular and more affordable option, and platinum is ideal for those with very sensitive skin.
