Definition

Picture jasper is a variety of jasper, which is itself an opaque form of chalcedony quartz, characterised by naturally occurring patterns that look remarkably like desert landscapes, mesas, skies and horizons. The patterns form through sediment, minerals and groundwater moving through the stone as it was created, and they are entirely natural. Colours are typically warm sandy browns, creams, tans and ochres, often with grey or black matrix lines. It is popular for cabochons, pendants and statement rings.

Frequently asked questions

Is picture jasper a natural stone?
Yes, the landscape-like patterns are entirely natural, formed through geological processes as sediment and mineral-rich water moved through the stone. No two pieces are ever the same, which is part of its appeal.
What does picture jasper mean symbolically?
Picture jasper is often associated with grounding, connection to the earth and visualising the big picture of one's life, which ties neatly to its landscape-like appearance. It is worn by many people as a grounding stone.
Is picture jasper durable enough for jewellery?
Yes, jasper is hard and tough, making it well suited to daily wear in pendants and earrings and reasonably durable in rings. Like most opaque stones it does not require the protective settings that fragile transparent gems need, though a bezel or thick prong setting is sensible for rings.
