What is ring size and how do you find yours?

Definition
Ring size is the measurement that describes how a ring fits on the finger, based on the inner circumference or diameter of the band. Different countries use different sizing systems: Australia and the United Kingdom use an alphabetical system running from A upward, the United States uses a numerical scale from 1 upward, and European sizes are based on the inner circumference in millimetres. An Australian size L, for example, is roughly equivalent to a US size 6 and an inner diameter of around 16.5mm. Getting sized by a jeweller or using a ring sizer tool gives the most accurate result.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I measure my ring size at home?
- Wrap a thin strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark where the ends meet, then measure the length in millimetres and compare it to a ring size chart. For the most accurate result, measure at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest, and avoid measuring when you are cold.
- What is the most common ring size for women in Australia?
- The average ring size for women in Australia is around a size L to M, equivalent to roughly a US 6 to 6.5 and an inner diameter of about 16.5 to 17mm. That said, finger sizes vary widely, and it is always worth measuring rather than assuming.
- Can a ring be resized if it is the wrong size?
- Most rings can be resized up or down by a skilled jeweller, though going up more than two sizes or down more than one can be difficult depending on the design. Rings with full eternity settings or very intricate shanks are harder to resize, so getting the size right initially is worth the effort.
