What is tubogas jewellery?

Definition
Tubogas is a jewellery construction technique in which narrow metal strips are wound and interlocked in a helical coil without soldering, creating a smooth, flexible tube-like chain that moves fluidly against the skin. The result looks almost like a solid metal hose and has a distinctive, fluid ripple when worn. The style was popularised in the mid-twentieth century by Bulgari, who used it extensively in their signature gold bracelet and necklace designs, and it remains closely associated with that house today.
Frequently asked questions
- How is tubogas different from a regular chain?
- A regular chain uses linked or soldered components, while tubogas is made by winding continuous metal strips in a self-locking coil with no solder at all. The construction gives it a much more solid, sculptural appearance and a very smooth flex.
- Is tubogas delicate or durable?
- When made in solid gold or quality metal, tubogas is quite robust because its interlocking structure distributes stress along the whole length. The main risk is the coil catching on something and pulling apart, so it is best treated gently.
- Which jeweller made tubogas famous?
- Bulgari (Bvlgari) is most closely associated with tubogas, using the technique in bold gold bracelets and necklaces from the 1940s onward. Their pieces helped define the look and the technique is now part of the brand's signature visual language.
