What is white howlite?

Definition
White howlite is a naturally occurring calcium silico-borate mineral with a bright, cool white base crossed by grey or black veining that gives it a marble-like appearance. It is opaque, relatively lightweight and porous, and because it accepts dye readily it is frequently dyed to simulate turquoise, lapis lazuli and other more expensive stones. In its natural undyed form, white howlite is popular for beads, pendants and bracelet stones, and it is associated with calming energy and patience in crystal traditions.
Frequently asked questions
- How can you tell if turquoise is actually dyed howlite?
- Dyed howlite is one of the most common substitutes for turquoise. The colour is often a little too even or saturated compared to natural turquoise, and if you look at a cross-section or a chipped edge under magnification, you may see that the dye has not penetrated deeply. The grey veining also tends to be more web-like than the brown matrix of genuine turquoise.
- Is howlite durable enough for everyday jewellery?
- Howlite is a fairly soft mineral, rating around 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, so it can scratch, chip or absorb chemicals relatively easily. It works well in earrings and pendants that do not get knocked, but rings worn daily will show wear faster than a harder stone would.
- What is white howlite said to represent?
- In crystal healing traditions, howlite is linked with patience, calm and stress reduction, and is often recommended as a stone to hold or wear when you need to slow down and quieten the mind. These associations are cultural rather than scientific.
