Does moissanite turn yellow?
Quick answer
No. Quality moissanite does not turn yellow over time. Lower-grade stones can show a slight yellow or green tint from the start, but the stone is chemically stable and unaffected by heat, light and chemicals at normal-wear conditions. If a moissanite looks warm, look for DEF colour grade, and check whether it just needs a clean.
Why silicon carbide stays the same colour
Moissanite is silicon carbide, a chemically stable compound that does not oxidise, corrode or break down at the temperatures, light levels and chemical exposures of normal wear. Unlike sterling silver, which tarnishes, or thin gold plating, which wears through to a base metal, the stone itself sits unchanged for the life of the ring. The one exception is during jewellery repair: moissanite can briefly turn light green under a torch, then returns to its original colour as it cools. That heat response is not the same as long-term colour change, and a competent jeweller works around it.
Where the yellow look usually comes from
Three things drive the perception. Lower-grade moissanite in the J or K range shows a yellow or warm undertone from day one, which buyers sometimes notice for the first time months after purchase. Films of hand cream, sunscreen and skin oil also tint the reflections warm until the stone is cleaned. And warm interior lighting makes any near-colourless stone read slightly yellow, even diamonds in the G to I range. If a moissanite looks warmer than you remember, clean it first, then check the colour grade on the certificate before assuming the stone has shifted.
