Why is my moissanite ring foggy?
Quick answer
Almost always dirt. Moissanite attracts skin oils, hand cream and soap residue, and the buildup blocks light through the stone. Soak the ring in warm water with a drop of dish soap for twenty minutes, scrub gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and dry. If a proper clean does not bring the sparkle back, the stone was probably low quality from the start.
Why moissanite films up faster than diamond
Moissanite's surface holds onto skin oils, hand cream and sunscreen more readily than diamond. Once a thin film sits on the facets, light scatters off the film instead of refracting through the stone, and the sparkle reads as foggy or milky. The stone underneath is unchanged. Rings worn through hand-washing, cooking, the gym and a regular skincare routine pick up that film fastest, sometimes within a week of cleaning. Diamond shows the same effect but tolerates a longer interval between washes. None of this is wear on the moissanite itself, which is why a proper clean restores it fully.
A cleaning routine that brings sparkle back
Soak the ring in warm water with a drop of mild dish soap for fifteen to twenty minutes, then brush the stone, the underside of the basket and the gallery with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and dry on a lint-free cloth. Repeat weekly if you wear the ring daily. Be cautious with ultrasonic cleaners on rings with pave or channel-set side stones; the vibration can loosen smaller stones over time. A professional clean once a year handles the buildup soap and a toothbrush cannot reach. If a thorough clean does not restore sparkle, the stone was likely a lower grade at purchase rather than newly damaged.
