What is the downside to lab-grown diamonds?
THE ANSWER
Resale value. That is the big one. Lab diamond prices keep dropping as production technology improves. A stone you buy today may cost much less in a few years. If you ever try to sell it, you will get very little back. Mined diamonds hold their value better, though they also lose money at resale. The other downside is perception. Some people still view lab diamonds as lesser. That opinion is becoming rare but it exists. If the ring is for wearing and enjoying, the downsides barely matter. If you are buying it as an investment or heirloom, the resale concern is worth thinking about.
