Can I trust lab-grown diamonds?

Quick answer

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are graded by the same independent laboratories that grade mined diamonds, including IGI and GIA, and the certificate reports cut, colour, clarity and carat to the same standards. Buy from a reputable jeweller, ask for the certificate and you get what the paper says. The category is well regulated and has been for years.

What the certificate actually covers

IGI and GIA grade lab-grown diamonds to the same 4Cs standard as mined: cut, colour, clarity and carat. The report explicitly identifies the stone as laboratory-grown and notes the growth method (CVD or HPHT). The girdle is laser-inscribed with the unique report number, which you can read under 10x magnification. The grading scale is identical to mined stones, so a G VS1 lab-grown is comparable to a G VS1 mined on every grade except origin.

How to verify what you are buying

Ask for the original certificate before buying. Match the laser inscription on the girdle to the report number on the paper, then check that report number against the IGI or GIA online verification tool. Both labs let you confirm a report in under a minute. A reputable jeweller will provide the certificate by default and will not push back on verification. If a stone is sold without a certificate, that is the warning sign, not whether it is lab-grown or mined.
