Ring Engraving

Quick answer

Ring engraving inscribes text, dates or symbols on the inside or outside of a ring. Interior engraving on the inside of the band is the most common for engagement and wedding rings, with space for around 20 to 30 characters depending on ring size and band width. Hand engraving lasts longer than laser engraving in soft metals, and resizing can affect the engraving area.

What a ring engraving is

Ring engraving is the process of inscribing text, dates, symbols or designs onto the inside or outside surface of a ring. Interior engraving on the inside of the band is the most common for engagement and wedding rings and creates a private message visible only to the wearer. Exterior engraving decorates the visible surface and is common on signet rings and fashion bands. Engraving adds personal meaning without changing the rings outward appearance.

History

Ring engraving goes back to ancient Rome, where signet rings were engraved with family crests and used to seal documents. Medieval poesy rings (from the French poesie, meaning poem) were inscribed with short romantic verses, mottoes or prayers. Common poesy ring inscriptions included mon coeur avez (you have my heart) and tout pour vous (all for you). Victorian rings were often engraved with dates and initials. Engraving remains one of the most personal ways to customise a ring today.

Types

Hand engraving is done by a skilled artisan using a burin or graver. The jeweller carves directly into the metal, producing unique, slightly irregular lettering with depth and character. Machine engraving uses a rotating cutting tool guided by a computer or template and produces precise, uniform lettering at lower cost. Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to mark the surface. It can reproduce fine detail, including images and custom fonts, and works on all metals including very hard ones like tungsten.

How to choose

Keep the inscription short because interior band space is limited, typically 20 to 30 characters depending on ring size and band width. Choose something meaningful: a date, initials, a short phrase, coordinates, or a private inside joke. Script and italic fonts read romantic; block and sans-serif read modern. Latin, French and Italian phrases add classic elegance. If you are uncertain, a date is always meaningful and timeless. Confirm the engraving in writing before it is done, because typos are difficult and expensive to fix.

Styling

Interior engraving is hidden and creates a private connection between the wearer and the ring. Exterior engraving on signet rings serves as a personal identifier. Engraved bands can be stacked with other rings without the engraving being visible. Some couples choose complementary engravings, like the same date in both rings, or two halves of a phrase. Custom handwriting engraving, where your actual handwriting is reproduced on the band, adds a strong personal touch.

Care

Interior engravings wear down over time with daily contact against the skin, particularly in softer metals like 18k gold. Deeper engravings last longer. Laser engravings are surface-level and may fade faster than hand-cut engravings. Avoid cleaning the inside of engraved rings with abrasive materials. When resizing a ring, the engraving area may be affected, so discuss this with the jeweller before resizing. Re-engraving is possible if the original inscription fades.

Price

Machine engraving is the most affordable, typically 20 to 50 AUD for a short inscription. Hand engraving costs more because of the artisan skill required, usually 50 to 150 AUD and up. Laser engraving sits around 30 to 80 AUD for text. Custom handwriting reproduction adds setup cost. Many jewellers offer basic engraving as a complimentary or low-cost addition with a ring purchase. Complex designs, exterior engraving and specialty fonts cost more.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters fit inside a ring?
Around 20 to 30 characters for most engagement and wedding band sizes, including spaces. Wider bands and larger ring sizes carry more, narrower bands and smaller ring sizes carry fewer. Confirm the limit with the jeweller before finalising the inscription.
Which engraving method lasts longest?
Hand engraving cuts deepest and lasts the longest, particularly on softer metals like 18k gold. Laser engraving is surface-level and can fade with daily wear. Machine engraving sits between the two.
Will engraving affect resizing?
It can, especially full-length interior engravings. The jeweller cuts the band at a specific point to resize, and the engraving in that area may need to be re-engraved afterward. Discuss this before resizing.
What should I have engraved?
Something meaningful and concise. A date, initials, coordinates, a short phrase, a wedding vow line or a private inside joke. If you are not sure, a date is timeless. Confirm the spelling and the wording in writing before the engraving happens.
