What is a black diamond?

Definition

Black diamonds are real diamonds, but they differ from white or coloured diamonds in that their colour comes from dense internal inclusions of graphite, iron oxide or structural defects that absorb light rather than reflecting it, giving the stone a deep, opaque black. Natural black diamonds, sometimes called carbonados, are rare and fetch a premium. Enhanced black diamonds are white or grey diamonds treated with heat or irradiation to turn them black, and these are significantly more affordable while still being genuine diamond material.

Frequently asked questions

Are black diamonds real diamonds?
Yes, they are real diamonds made of the same carbon crystal structure as white diamonds. Natural black diamonds are rare and form differently from other diamonds, while enhanced black diamonds are treated stones, but both are genuine diamond.
Why are black diamonds cheaper than white diamonds?
Natural black diamonds are cheaper partly because their opaque colour means standard cut grading and clarity grading do not apply in the same way. Enhanced black diamonds are even more affordable because they are treated stones that started as lower-quality material.
Do black diamonds sparkle?
Black diamonds reflect light differently from transparent diamonds; they have a metallic, glassy surface lustre rather than the internal brilliance white diamonds are known for. The effect is striking but more like polished stone than sparkling crystal.
