What is an eternity band?

Definition

An eternity band is a ring set with a continuous, unbroken row of identically cut gemstones running all the way around the band, with no gap or plain metal section, symbolising never-ending love or commitment. Diamonds are by far the most popular choice, though sapphires, emeralds and rubies are used too. The full circle of stones distinguishes it from a half-eternity band, where stones only cover the top section of the ring. Eternity bands are popular as anniversary gifts, wedding rings and stacking rings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an eternity band and a half eternity ring?
An eternity band has stones all the way around the ring so the circle of gems is complete. A half eternity ring has stones only on the top half or front section, which makes it easier to resize and usually less expensive, while still giving most of the visual effect.
Can an eternity band be resized?
A full eternity band is very difficult to resize because the stones run the entire circumference; cutting and rejoining the band would mean removing or reseating stones. For this reason it is particularly important to get the size right when ordering, and half eternity bands are easier to adjust.
When do you give an eternity band?
They are popular anniversary gifts, particularly for milestone years like the first, fifth and tenth anniversary. Some couples also exchange them at the birth of a child, and they work beautifully as wedding bands or added to an engagement ring stack.
