Definition

Full lead crystal is a type of glass that contains a minimum of 24% lead oxide by weight, which significantly increases its refractive index and gives it a brilliant sparkle, greater weight and a characteristic ring when tapped. The lead content makes it softer than regular glass, which allows artisans to cut and engrave intricate facets that catch the light beautifully. In jewellery and decorative objects it has long been prized for its clarity and depth of brilliance, though many manufacturers now use lead-free alternatives with similar optical properties.

Frequently asked questions

Is full lead crystal safe to wear as jewellery?
In set jewellery, the lead crystal is encased in metal and not in direct prolonged skin contact, so it is generally considered safe. However, many contemporary jewellers now prefer lead-free crystal to avoid any concern.
What is the difference between full lead crystal and regular glass?
Full lead crystal contains lead oxide which raises its refractive index, making it sparkle and refract light more intensely than ordinary glass. It also has a denser weight and a distinctive clear ring when struck.
Why is lead crystal being replaced?
Environmental and health concerns about lead have led manufacturers to develop lead-free crystal using barium oxide or titanium oxide instead. These alternatives can achieve similar brilliance without the toxicity risks of lead compounds.
