What is GIA?

Definition
GIA stands for the Gemological Institute of America, a non-profit organisation founded in 1931 and based in California. It is the world's leading authority on gemstone research and education, and the organisation that created the four Cs system for grading diamonds: carat weight, colour, clarity and cut. A GIA grading report is the most trusted and widely accepted diamond certificate in the world, used by jewellers, buyers and insurers to confirm a diamond's quality. GIA also grades coloured stones and has recently absorbed the grading work of the former AGS laboratory.
Frequently asked questions
- What does a GIA certificate mean?
- A GIA certificate, formally called a GIA Grading Report, is an independent assessment of a diamond's four Cs issued by GIA's laboratory. It confirms the stone's carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade and cut grade based on standardised, unbiased testing.
- Is a GIA-certified diamond worth more?
- A GIA report does not change the diamond, but the confidence it gives buyers means GIA-certified stones consistently sell at a premium over uncertified stones of similar stated quality. The certificate reduces the risk a buyer takes.
- Does GIA certify lab-grown diamonds?
- Yes, GIA issues grading reports for lab-grown diamonds using the same four Cs system, though the reports are formatted slightly differently to distinguish them from natural stones.
