What is diamond grading?

Definition
Diamond grading is the systematic evaluation of a diamond's quality by trained gemologists, using standardised criteria to describe carat weight, colour, clarity and cut, the four Cs established by GIA. Independent grading labs assess each stone against master comparison stones and laboratory instruments, assigning grades that allow the diamond to be described and priced consistently, regardless of who is selling it. A grading report from a respected lab like GIA or IGI gives buyers an objective, verifiable account of what they are purchasing.
Frequently asked questions
- Who grades diamonds?
- Independent gemological laboratories are the most trusted sources, with GIA the most widely respected worldwide. Other labs include IGI, AGS and HRD. Some jewellers also grade their own stock, but independent lab grades are considered more reliable.
- What are the four Cs of diamond grading?
- Carat weight is the diamond's mass, colour is graded D to Z from colourless to light yellow, clarity assesses inclusions and blemishes, and cut evaluates how well the stone has been fashioned to maximise light return. All four together determine a diamond's overall quality and value.
- Does every diamond need to be graded?
- Smaller accent diamonds are rarely certificated individually, but any significant centre stone benefits from independent grading. For a diamond over about 0.50ct, a lab report provides transparency and peace of mind for the buyer.
