What is a gemologist?

Definition
A gemologist is a specialist trained in the identification, grading and valuation of gemstones, including diamonds, coloured stones and pearls. They use magnification, spectroscopy and other lab equipment to determine a stone's species, variety, origin and whether it has been treated. The most widely recognised qualification is GIA's Graduate Gemologist diploma, though bodies like the Gemmological Association of Great Britain, known as Gem-A, and GAA in Australia also award respected credentials. A gemologist's appraisal is what underpins independent diamond certificates and insurance valuations.
Frequently asked questions
- When do you need a gemologist?
- A gemologist is most useful when you are buying or selling a significant stone, having jewellery insured, or settling an estate where pieces need to be accurately valued. They can also identify whether a stone has been treated and confirm it is what the seller claims.
- What qualifications does a gemologist need?
- The most respected credential in Australia and internationally is the GIA Graduate Gemologist (GG) diploma. The Gem and Jewellery Association of Australia (GAA) and Gem-A in the UK offer equivalent qualifications that are well regarded in the trade.
- Is a gemologist the same as a jeweller?
- Not necessarily. A jeweller designs, makes or sells jewellery, while a gemologist specialises specifically in stone identification and grading. Many jewellers study gemology to deepen their knowledge, but the two roles are separate.
