What is gemology?
By Jared James · Last updated 21 May 2026
Definition
Gemology, also spelled gemmology in British usage, is the science concerned with the study of gemstones. It covers the physical and optical properties of minerals, rocks and organic materials used as gems, as well as how to identify them, grade their quality, detect treatments and determine their geographic origin. Students of gemology learn to use tools like the refractometer, spectroscope and loupe, and the field underpins diamond grading, gem certification and jewellery appraisal worldwide.
