Definition

A wristwatch is a small timepiece designed to be worn on the wrist, held in place by a bracelet, strap or integrated band. The watch itself, called the case, contains the movement, either a mechanical or quartz mechanism, and is covered by a crystal, which can be glass, sapphire or mineral. Fine jewellery-quality watches use precious metal cases and bracelets, often set with diamonds or other gems, and sit at the intersection of horology and jewellery as both functional tools and wearable objects of value.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mechanical and quartz watch?
A mechanical watch is powered by a wound spring and uses a series of gears and a balance wheel to keep time, while a quartz watch uses a battery and an oscillating quartz crystal. Mechanical watches require more servicing but are prized for their craftsmanship, while quartz watches are generally more accurate and need less maintenance.
What makes a watch a fine jewellery piece?
A watch becomes jewellery when the case, bracelet or dial are set with precious gemstones, made in gold or platinum, or designed with the same level of craft and artistry as a fine jewellery piece. Many luxury watch houses produce pieces that are as much about gem setting and metalwork as timekeeping.
How should you care for a fine wristwatch?
Keep it away from strong magnetic fields, extreme temperatures and harsh chemicals. Service mechanical watches every three to five years to keep the movement clean and lubricated. If the watch has a leather strap, avoid prolonged water exposure; metal bracelets are more tolerant of moisture.
