Is a VS1 or VS2 better?

Quick answer

VS1 is higher clarity on paper, but VS2 is the more common pick for value. Both are very slightly included, so inclusions are only visible under 10x magnification and not to the eye in a finished ring. VS2 costs less, which leaves more budget for cut and carat. Choose VS1 if the paper grade matters to you, and VS2 if you'd rather spend the difference elsewhere.

When the clarity gap actually shows up

VS2 inclusions are eye-visible roughly 5% of the time, almost always under specific conditions: stones above 2 carats, or step-cut shapes like emerald and Asscher where the open table makes inclusions easier to spot. In a sub-2ct round, princess or oval, VS2 reads identical to VS1 once it is in a setting. The clarity gap is real on the grading report but rarely visible on the hand.

Where to spend the difference

VS2 typically costs 10 to 20% less than VS1 at the same colour, cut and carat. On a 1ct stone that can be the difference between a good cut grade and an excellent one, or between G colour and F. Cut grade affects how the diamond looks to the eye more than clarity above SI1, so the usual advice is to put the saving into cut first, then carat, then colour.
