When did halo engagement rings become popular?

Quick answer

Halo designs go back to the Georgian era and had a strong run through Art Deco in the 1920s. The modern halo boom hit in the mid-2000s, when cushion-cut diamonds with micropave halos became one of the most common bridal styles. The frenzy has settled in favour of ovals, solitaires and toi et moi over the 2020s, but the halo remains a standard category in every collection.

Georgian to Art Deco origins

The earliest halo rings were called cluster rings, and they trace to the Georgian era between 1714 and 1837. Georgian clusters often used a flat-cut garnet or coloured stone surrounded by seed pearls or rose-cut diamonds, with the stones foiled and closed at the back to enhance colour. The Victorian and Edwardian eras carried the format forward with lace filigree, milgrain edging and more symmetrical layouts. Art Deco of the 1920s and 1930s reshaped the halo around step cuts: emerald and asscher centres with geometric halos of diamonds or contrasting coloured stones, mostly in white gold and platinum. Most vintage halo aesthetics on the market today borrow from this period.

The mid-2000s boom and the 2020s plateau

The modern halo boom hit in the mid-2000s, driven by the cushion-cut centre with a thin pave halo. Several high-profile bridal launches pushed the configuration into the top three bridal styles alongside solitaire and three-stone for most of the 2010s. By 2026 the share has settled to roughly fifth place behind solitaire, three-stone, bezel and trilogy, with oval and round centres replacing cushion as the dominant cuts. Hidden halo is the variation gaining the most share, particularly under oval centres. Halo remains a standard category in every bridal collection rather than a passing trend, and the underlying cluster format has now been in continuous use for roughly three centuries.
