What are huggie earrings?

Definition

Huggie earrings are small, thick hoop-style earrings designed to sit close to the earlobe, with a depth and body that standard thin hoops lack. They get their name from the way they seem to hug the lobe rather than hanging away from it, and the hinged or snap-shut closure makes them easy to put on. Huggies are a versatile everyday piece, often set with diamonds or a row of stones along the front, and they work well stacked with studs or worn alone for a clean, modern look.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a huggie different from a regular hoop earring?
The main difference is size and proportion. Huggies are small and thick, with a substantial body that sits against the lobe, while regular hoops are thinner and larger, creating a visible circle or arc. There is no strict cut-off, but hoops over about 12 millimetres in diameter are generally called hoops, and the smaller, chunkier ones are huggies.
Can you add charms or pendants to huggie earrings?
Yes, and this is one of the reasons they are so popular. Many huggie styles are made with a small ring or attachment point so you can hang a tiny charm, a drop or a chain from them, giving you a lot of different looks from one pair.
Are huggie earrings good for sensitive ears?
Gold huggies, particularly in 18ct or 9ct solid gold, are a very good choice for sensitive ears because there is very little nickel in the mix. Titanium and surgical steel are also safe options. Avoid plated styles where the base metal can cause reactions once the coating wears.
