What is a mounting in jewellery?
By Jared James · Last updated 21 May 2026
Definition
A mounting is the metal framework of a jewellery piece designed to hold a gemstone securely in place, which includes the setting itself and any supporting metalwork such as the band, gallery and prongs. The terms mounting and setting are often used interchangeably, though strictly speaking the mounting is the complete metal structure and the setting refers specifically to how the stone is gripped within it. Mountings are made in gold, platinum or silver and are sometimes sold as semi-mounts, meaning the metalwork is finished but the centre stone has not yet been supplied.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a semi-mount in jewellery?
- A semi-mount is a finished ring or pendant mounting with accent stones already set but with an empty space left for the main gemstone. Buyers can choose their own centre stone and have it set by a jeweller, which is a popular way to create a custom engagement ring.
- Can a gemstone be remounted?
- Yes, remounting is a standard jewellery service where a stone from an old or damaged piece is carefully removed and set into a new mounting. It is a good way to give an inherited or sentimental stone a fresh setting while preserving the gem.
- What should I look for in a good mounting?
- Even metal thickness, well-finished solder joins, prongs or bezel walls that are secure without covering too much of the stone, and a design that protects the stone from the knocks most likely in everyday wear. The mounting should also complement the shape and colour of the gem it holds.
