What is a setting in jewellery?

Definition
A setting in jewellery refers to the method by which a gemstone is held securely within the metal of a piece. The setting is both structural, keeping the stone in place, and aesthetic, framing the stone and determining how much of it is visible and how much light it receives. The main categories include claw or prong settings, where small metal prongs grip the girdle of the stone; bezel settings, where a rim of metal wraps around the stone; channel settings, where stones sit in a groove; and pavé settings, where many small stones are held by tiny prongs cut from the metal itself.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the most secure type of setting?
- A bezel setting, which wraps a full or partial collar of metal around the gemstone, is generally considered the most protective because it guards the girdle of the stone on all sides. Channel settings are also very secure for rows of stones. Claw settings expose more of the stone but are not inherently insecure when well-made and maintained.
- What setting is best for an engagement ring?
- It depends on lifestyle and the stone. A claw setting maximises light entering the stone and shows it off fully, which suits diamonds and brightly coloured gems. A bezel is better for very active people because it protects the stone's edge. A pavé band adds sparkle around the centrepiece without competing with it. There is no single best option.
- Do settings need maintenance?
- Yes, particularly claw settings, where the prongs can work loose or wear down over time. Having claws checked and re-tipped by a jeweller every few years is sensible for any ring worn daily. Bezel and channel settings need less routine attention but can also wear over many years.
