What does opaque mean in jewellery?

Definition
Opaque, in the context of gemstones and jewellery, means that no light passes through the stone at all. Hold an opaque gem up to a bright light source and you see only its surface; the stone blocks light completely rather than letting it filter through. Turquoise, malachite, lapis lazuli, onyx and most jaspers are opaque, and their beauty comes entirely from surface colour and pattern rather than any internal sparkle or glow.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between opaque, translucent and transparent gemstones?
- Transparent stones, like clear diamonds and sapphires, let light pass cleanly through so you can see through them. Translucent stones, like rose quartz or chalcedony, allow some light in but scatter it so the stone glows rather than being see-through. Opaque stones block light entirely.
- Are opaque gemstones less valuable?
- Opacity alone does not determine value. Some of the most prized stones, like fine turquoise, lapis lazuli and top-grade jade, are completely opaque and can be very valuable. The quality of colour, pattern, cut and rarity all matter more than whether the stone lets light through.
- Can opaque stones still sparkle?
- Opaque stones do not have the internal sparkle of transparent gems because light does not pass through them, but they can have a high surface lustre. Polished malachite or onyx, for instance, can look very glossy and reflective, just in a different way from a brilliant-cut diamond.
