What is a textured finish on jewellery?

Definition

A textured finish is any surface treatment applied to metal jewellery that creates a non-smooth effect, as distinct from a high polish. Common textures include hammered, which leaves soft, irregular dimples from a metalsmith's hammer; brushed or satin, which gives a fine directional grain; matte, which is a flat, low-sheen surface; and sand-blasted or granulated finishes that add a grainy depth. Textured surfaces catch and diffuse light differently from polished metal, giving pieces a more organic, tactile quality and often helping to hide minor scratches in everyday wear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a hammered and a brushed finish?
A hammered finish is created by physically striking the metal surface with a hammer, leaving a series of overlapping, slightly concave impressions that scatter light in many directions. A brushed or satin finish is made by drawing a fine abrasive across the surface in one direction, producing a subtle, parallel grain that gives a soft, muted sheen.
Does a textured finish scratch easily?
Textured finishes like hammered and brushed tend to hide surface scratches better than a mirror polish, because their irregular or directional surface already diffuses light. A scratch on a polished piece stands out immediately, while on a textured piece it often blends in with the existing surface character.
Can a textured finish be restored if it wears smooth?
Yes, a jeweller can re-apply most textured finishes. Hammering, re-brushing or re-matting a piece restores the original surface, though the piece needs to be cleaned and any gemstones protected during the process. It is worth asking your jeweller whether the finish can be refreshed before you buy.
