What is a tracer band?

Definition

A tracer band is a wedding or anniversary band that has been contoured to follow the profile of an engagement ring, fitting snugly against it without any gaps. Where a straight band would sit awkwardly beside a solitaire with a raised halo or a curved prong basket, a tracer band curves around or notches into the engagement ring's silhouette so both pieces lie flush against each other on the finger. It is also sometimes called a fitted, shadow or contour band.

Frequently asked questions

How is a tracer band different from a regular wedding band?
A standard wedding band has a straight or uniformly curved inner profile that may leave a visible gap when worn alongside an engagement ring with an intricate or elevated setting. A tracer band is custom-shaped to mirror the contours of your specific engagement ring, so the two sit flush together.
Does a tracer band have to be made by the same jeweller?
For the best fit, yes. A tracer band needs to be made or at least measured against your actual engagement ring to match its curves precisely. Some jewellers offer a service where you send or bring the engagement ring in so the tracer band can be shaped around it, while others work from exact measurements.
Can you wear a tracer band without the engagement ring?
You can, and many people do on days when they prefer to wear just the band. A tracer band that curves or notches specifically to fit the engagement ring may look slightly curved or unusual on its own, but this varies depending on the design, and some tracer bands are subtle enough to look intentional as a standalone piece.
