What is tungsten in jewellery?

Definition

Tungsten is a grey-white, very heavy metal with an exceptionally high melting point, and in jewellery it is almost always used as tungsten carbide, a compound that is among the hardest materials available for wearable pieces. Tungsten carbide rings are virtually scratchproof under everyday conditions and have a dense, satisfying weight that many wearers find appealing. The trade-off is that tungsten cannot be resized and, if the ring needs to come off in an emergency, it requires a vice or cracker tool rather than a standard ring cutter.

Frequently asked questions

Does tungsten scratch easily?
Tungsten carbide is one of the hardest materials used in jewellery and resists scratches far better than gold, silver or stainless steel under normal wear. The main thing that can mark it is contact with something harder, such as diamond or certain ceramics.
Can a tungsten ring be resized?
No, tungsten carbide is too hard and brittle to be sized by a jeweller in the way that gold or silver can. If you need a different size you will need a new ring, so it is worth measuring carefully before you buy.
Is tungsten jewellery safe to wear?
Yes, tungsten carbide jewellery is generally safe and hypoallergenic for most people. It is worth checking that the ring is binder-free or nickel-free if you have metal sensitivities, as some older or cheaper pieces use a cobalt binder that can cause reactions.
