Definition

Titanium is a naturally occurring metallic element prized in jewellery for its exceptional strength-to-weight ratio, meaning it is both very tough and surprisingly light to wear. It is biocompatible and essentially hypoallergenic, which makes it a leading material for body piercing jewellery and a good option for people sensitive to other metals. When anodised, titanium develops vivid surface colours ranging from golds and purples to blues and greens without any dyes, and it is also used in contemporary wedding bands and men's jewellery for its modern, industrial look.

Frequently asked questions

Is titanium jewellery hypoallergenic?
Yes, implant-grade titanium is considered highly biocompatible and very rarely causes skin reactions, which is why it is the preferred metal for fresh piercings and for anyone with metal sensitivities. It contains no nickel in its pure form, making it a safe alternative to stainless steel or silver alloys that may include nickel.
Can titanium jewellery be resized?
Generally no, which is a significant practical consideration for rings. Titanium is extremely hard to cut and work, so most jewellers cannot resize a titanium ring the way they would gold or platinum. It is important to have your size confirmed accurately before ordering a titanium ring.
How does titanium compare to platinum for jewellery?
Both are strong and hypoallergenic, but they are quite different. Platinum is significantly heavier and more prestigious, holds gemstones with more grip due to its density, and can be polished and worked by any fine jeweller. Titanium is lighter, harder to scratch and much more affordable, but it is harder to work and cannot be soldered or easily repaired.
